You will be My Witnesses - VII Plenary Council
VII Plenary Council of the School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King - Update #1 – August 27, 2014
You will be My Witnesses even to the ends of the Earth (Acts of the Apostles 1:8) is the theme of the VII Plenary Council of our Congregation taking place August 25 – September 6, 2014 at our Mother House in Maribor, Slovenia. Present for the Plenary Council are the members of the General government, the Provincial and Regional Superiors, la representative from each province as well as the Region of Rome and our mission in Africa (Congo). As stated in our Constitutions in article 139, The Plenary Council has an advisory function. It occurs one time between one general chapter and the next.
Enlightened by readings form Scripture and the Franciscan sources, our meetings began with prayer and a procession. We were also enriched by several passages from the chronicles of the mother House and from the Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium).
The official opening of the VII Plenary chapter occurred as Sr. Klara Šimunović, Superior General, gave ther opening address to the chapter participants in the assembly room. In her address Sr. Klara recalled the coming of the first Sisters to Maribor from Graz 150 years ago when they opened a small house which would become the cradle of our Congregation... For us who gather as representatives of the entire Congregation, it already seems that “the Lord has does great things for us and has filled us with joy (PS 126:3) because we can setup our tents and pray and reflect in the place where our roots were first planted and from which our Congregation spread. Recalling that the past and the future continually interact, Sr. Klara encouraged us to remember our history and courageously embrace the future seeking to revive our missionary zeal and again acquire a renewed momentum for the new evangelization.
During the sessions of the Plenary Council the participants will seek to examine our actual Congregational situation, our witness and faithfulness to the essential elements of religious life, our commitments to evangelization in the contemporary world and to examine the theme of collaboration and sharing our charism with the laity. Speakers have been invited to assist us. The Instrument of Work containing the contributions of all the sisters of our Congregation will also be of assistance.
Encouraged by the many sisters who have left an example of authentic witness to a life impassioned for Christ and His Kingdom. we are also called today to witness to the Gospel with our lives in the places where we minister.
